The Rams Boys Varsity Soccer team traveled to James Weir Stadium to take on the host Belle Vernon Leopard. In what turned out to be a beautiful soccer night with spectators in the stands, the Rams battled hard with the WPIAL AAA pre-season ranked #2 Leps.
BVA was able to find success early as a hard, low shot escaped the grip of Rams goalkeeper Jeremy Mullen leaving an easy tap in for a trailing attacker to follow up and score the first goal. The Rams responded with composure and confidence as they contained the BVA offense for the remainder of the half.
Beginning the second half, the field began to tilt in favor of the Rams. Controlling much of the play, the Ringgold Rams were able to create some goal scoring opportunities throughout the half. With just over 6 minutes left, a well placed from Jonnie McDuffie left Zach Alvarez just in front of goal with only the goalie to beat. Zach seized the opportunity and fired a shot low and away from the keeper to tie the game.
Entering OT, it looked as though it could go either way. Unfortunately for the Rams, the length of the game began to show it’s effects. With under one minute to go in the OT1, BVA was able to recover a loss ball near the Rams goal and slide a game-winner into the net.
The Rams are back in action on Wednesday, 9/16/20, at home versus Laurel Highlands.
