The Ringgold basketball teams are set to begin their 2016-2017 campaign in tip-off tournaments this weekend.
The boys will open play in the Mount Pleasant Tournament, where they play the host Vikings on Friday before playing Norwin on Saturday.
Ringgold will rely heavily on senior captains Anthony Pampena and Dakota Browning. Most nights Ringgold will use Pampena’s outside shooting to stretch the defense and open up the paint for Browning to go to work down low. Browning lead the Rams in scoring and rebounding last year.
With PIAA basketball expanding from four to six classifications, the Rams will see some new faces in section play. They will compete in Class 5-A, playing in Section 1 with Albert Gallatin, Laurel Highlands, McKeesport, Thomas Jefferson, Trinity and West Mifflin.
The girls will also open up on Friday night at the Montour Tip-Off Tournament against Central Valley. They will then play Knoch in their second game on Saturday. Coach Erika McCarthy has the team looking to build off of last season’s playoff campaign, where they advanced to the WPIAL quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion South Fayette.
Leading the charge for the Lady Rams will be junior Ashley Briscoe who averaged 17 points per game last season and enters the year 384 points shy of 1,000 for her career. She will be joined by other starters Natalie Adams (Sr.), Nya Adams (Fr.), Taylor Mendicino (Jr.) and Johnna Mocniak (Sr.).
Like the boys, the girls also moved up to Class 5-A and will see some added travel to their section schedule. Their section opponents include Albert Gallatin, Connellsville, Greensburg Salem, Laurel Highlands, Trinity and Uniontown.
The girls game is set for 6pm at Montour High School, while the boys have a 7:30pm tip at Mt. Pleasant.
