Game Recap

The Ringgold football team made the lengthy trip to Taggart Stadium in New Castle on Friday night for a crossover match-up with the Red Hurricanes.

In what seems to be a recurring theme this season, both teams battled against the weather in the first quarter. With the rain falling and the wind swirling, neither team could find much offensive momentum. A 63-yard punt return by New Castle’s Geno Stone was the only score in the first quarter.

Trailing 7-0, RInggold went to work in the second quarter leaning heavily on its ground game. Brenden Small found the end zone twice on scoring runs of 27-and 36-yards en route to just shy of 100 yards rushing in the second quarter. The Rams held a 14-7 advantage at the break.

Having deferred the opening kick-off, Ringgold started the second half with the ball. Only a few plays into their opening drive, quarterback George Martin found Max Maciejewski for a 61-yard catch and run down the sideline to give Ringgold a 21-7 lead.

The Red Hurricanes would not go away and back-to-back scores tied the game at 27 early in the fourth quarter. It appeared as if Ringgold was poised to take the lead back until Martin was picked off at the goal line by New Castle’s Marcus Hooker. Two plays later, Tyrese Youngblood came up with the play of the game, ripping the ball away from New Castle’s Matt Senchak and racing 35-yards to end zone. Ringgold forced another fumble on New Castle’s next drive and put the game away on Small’s 6-yard scoring run with 2:37 remaining in the game.

Final score: Ringgold 41, New Castle 27.

Small led the Rams offensively finishing with 25 carries for 165 yards and four touchdowns. George Martin completed 12 of 21 passes for 252 yards and one touchdown.

With the win, the Rams improved to 6-2 (5-2) and currently sit in fourth place of Section 4-AAAA. Next up for the Ringgold is their final home game of the season against Trinity on Friday night. Kick-off is set for 7pm with Senior Night festivities beginning at 6:25pm.
